According to UN Population Division estimates, the foreign born represented 19.5 percent (449,215) of the total population of Latvia in 2005.

Note: Many long-term residents in Latvia who are counted as "foreign born" today were born in other republics of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before it ceased to exist as one unified country in 1991. Therefore, the number of foreign born in contemporary Latvia may reflect the country's changed geopolitical status rather than its immigration trends. The former USSR included 15 countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
