Global City Migration Map Home > Global City Migration Map

In most cases, international migrants do not randomly choose their country of destination. On the contrary, for a variety of economic, social, linguistic, and other reasons, they migrate to certain countries and, within these countries, to certain cities.

The Global City Migration Map allows you to expand your knowledge and understanding of the movements of international migrants to urban gateways around the world.

The tool leverages one-of-a-kind, city-level data provided by the Globalization, Urbanization and Migration (GUM) project, which hosts data on the foreign born in over 150 metropolitan areas of 1 million or more people in more than 50 countries (click here for GUM's definition of a metropolitan area) .

The Global City Migration Map Tool allows you to generate four maps showing global metropolitan areas with:

  1. 1 million or more foreign-born residents + fact sheets on 18 global cities
  2. 500,000 or more foreign-born residents
  3. 100,000 or more foreign-born residents
  4. foreign-born residents accounting for 25+ percent of the city’s total population

Definition: The cities shown on these maps are metropolitan areas of 1 million or more people with at least 100,000 foreign-born residents.

Note: Although every effort was made to ensure the quality of the data, inconsistency in the data may arise due to the assumptions made during the development of the GUM database. We encourage our users to visit the GUM website for further information.

Click on the city’s name on the map to generate a fact sheet showing the number and the share of foreign-born residents in the city, the top countries of origin, and a list of further resources. Our tool provides the fact sheets only for 18 metropolitan areas. To find out about the foreign born living in other metropolitan areas around the world, click here (Hint: first select the country from the menu on the right and then select the metro area of your interest).
