Between 1980 and 2004, 9.9 million applications for asylum were lodged in 39 countries in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia. This data tool allows you to analyze the numbers and origins of asylum seekers over 24 years.

The data are limited to applications only and are not the number of persons who were granted asylum or resettled.

The source of the data is the UNHCR Population Data Unit. Most of the 39 countries included in the UNHCR data are those with developed asylum systems where information is available. For more information about the data, click here.

How many asylum seekers are there?
To find out the number of asylum applications lodged in all of the 39 countries of destination, in each of the 39 asylum countries, or from different countries of origin, 1) choose one of the table options listed below then 2) click "submit."
