According to UN Population Division estimates, the foreign born represented 5.9 percent (121,291) of the total population of Macedonia in 2005.
Note: Many long-term residents in Macedonia who are counted as "foreign born" today were born in other states of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Therefore, the number of foreign born in contemporary Macedonia may reflect the country's changed geopolitical status rather than its immigration trends. The former Yugoslavia included the following states: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia.
