Note: Many long-term residents in the Czech
Republic who are counted as "foreign born" today were born in Slovakia
before Czechoslovakia underwent a "velvet divorce" in 1993 and became two countries:
the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Therefore, the number of foreign born in the
contemporary Czech Republic may reflect the country's changed geopolitical status
rather than its immigration trends.
