New Dutch Data, Indonesia, and Refugee Resettlement
One year after the events of September 11, the reverberations are still being felt far beyond the borders of the United States. In addition to its regular features, The Source this month takes a look at one area deeply affected by heightened security concerns: refugee resettlement.
- MPI Co-Director Kathleen Newland discusses the implications of proposed and
current changes to global refugee resettlement practices and the narrowing of admissions channels. Our Spotlight this month, by MPI's Erin Patrick, looks at the US refugee resettlement program in depth and offers a road map to understanding the decline in admissions.
- Although the prospects for harmonized international migration data are uncertain, Bela Hovy, the head of UNHCR's population data unit, gives us reason to be optimistic based on refugee and asylum statistics.
This month you'll also find:
- Richard Fry, senior research associate at the Pew Hispanic Center, presenting new findings about the US-born children of Latino immigrants. New data suggest that they will fare better than their immigrant peers thanks to pursuing education before work.
- Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, is also one of the world's major sources of unskilled international
migrant workers. In a new country profile, Graeme Hugo of the University of Adelaide explores Indonesia's complex migration terrain.
- Looking for new ways to incorporate international migration into your curriculum? Our Educator's Corner shows you how to take advantage of our virtual resources and data.
- Don't forget to visit our Global Data Center this month to view new Dutch data.

On behalf of The Source team, thank you for your comments and your suggestions.
